Creative Access partnered with global communications agency FleishmanHillard UK to explore the influence of class dynamics on careers within the creative industries.
Most strikingly, where current efforts to promote diversity and inclusivity exist, a persistent pay gap and discrimination based on class persists in the UK’s creative sectors. Respondents were united in placing class representation at senior level as the most urgent topic for employers to address (two in three).
Opinions on the severity of this issue differed between class groups. 73% of working-class respondents identify a lack of senior working-class representation, and only 46% of upper middle-class respondents agreed.
Leading law firm Lee & Thompson has partnered with Creative Access to fund 10 places per year over a 3 year period, on a training programme specifically focused on addressing the barriers to progression often faced by mid to senior-level individuals working in the creative industries from under-represented groups.
This year’s scheme is aimed at those who are at mid to senior career level from under-represented groups who are currently freelancing, who are keen grow their network and skillset. Funding in to 2024 will go towards the development of a career development programme for senior professionals working in the creative industries from historically under-represented backgrounds.
Mo Siewcharran, a former Director of Marketing and Communications at Nielsen Books who sadly passed away. In 2018, Mo’s husband, John Seaton, launched a memorial fund to encourage young people ethnically diverse backgrounds to pursue a career in the Arts. The Fund, administered by Creative Access, support internships for young talent from ethnicities that are under-represented in the theatre, publishing and music industries.
Awards are granted twice-yearly in July and December. The Mo Siewcharran Fund contributes to the salary of an intern for a six-month traineeship and a full programme of support is provided by, Creative Access, to ensure the trainee thrives in their new role. To date the Fund has funded over 45 internships. Those interested in applying should contact info@creativeaccess.org.uk.
Without the Mo Siewcharran Fund we would never have found Mila, who is key part of Profile with a full publishing career ahead of her. In Mo’s memory Creative Access has done a remarkable thing and made a difference.
