Verity Bargate Award Intern

Soho Theatre is a vibrant London venue for new theatre, comedy and cabaret. They are a charity and social enterprise with a mission to produce new work, discover and nurture new writers and artists, and target and develop new audiences.

The team at Soho Theatre are on the hunt for an intern to join their creative team to help find the next Verity Bargate Award winner. Working alongside their Literary Manager, this is a fantastic opportunity to support every stage of the playwriting competition, from accepting and logging submissions and answering queries to reading plays and organising the Award ceremony.


  • To respond to general queries about the competition, by phone or email
  • Assisting with putting together the readers’ schedule
  • Supporting the development of the Verity Bargate Award database (we anticipate receiving over 1,000 scripts next year)
  • Supporting freelance readers in accessing their scripts, writing reports and feeding back to the Artistic team.
  • Reading plays with the support of the Literary Manager, and providing feedback (don’t worry if it’s not something you’ve done before)
  • Attending internal and team meetings as required
  • Assisting with organising key events, including regular readers meetings, the Judge’s meeting and Award Ceremony
  • Supporting Soho’s work with writers and emerging artists more generally; attending readings and sharings at Soho
  • Attending external coverage meetings and shows in London for Soho Theatre
  • To support the aims and objectives of Soho Theatre Company both internally and externally
  • Script reading and reporting
  • Database management
  • Event management


  • Experience in customer service, particularly dealing with queries by phone or email from the general public on behalf of an organisation
  • Experience of using Excel spreadsheets, and other MS Office programmes to track information
  • An interest in theatre and specifically playwriting
  • An interest in Soho Theatre’s programme
  • Strong communication skills
  • Excellent organisation skills
  • Confident with numeracy and written literacy
  • A positive, mature, professional attitude towards work and strong work ethic
  • A friendly and approachable manner when communicating with both public and colleagues
  • An ability to think on your feet and to think ahead
  • An ability to maintain a calm, friendly exterior when it gets busy
  • Good time-keeping
  • A flexible attitude


  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Ideally GCSE Maths & English grade C
