The Scheme 2019

The Scheme is a place for new and different voices; voices that aren’t currently being heard in publishing. Could yours be one of them?

Penguin Random House is the UK’s largest book publisher. From bestselling writers to new storytellers, and big thinkers to political commentators, they are home to some of the world’s biggest authors. That list includes Michelle Obama, Stormzy, Jacqueline Wilson, Zadie Smith, and Yuval Noah Harari – and everyone in between.

They currently have eight openings on The Scheme for a six month paid traineeship. As a member of this Scheme, you’ll join an editorial team in one of their London based publishing houses. For six months you’ll be part of the day to day running of the place, experiencing the world of publishing from the inside. That might include:

  • Working with the Michael Joseph editorial team to publish some of the biggest and best-selling authors in the world today: from Jamie Oliver to Marian Keyes and Stephen Fry
  • Working across the two Children’s editorial teams, helping them to build their preschool non-trade publishing for brands like Ladybird and Peter Rabbit. This means you’ll get to publish for specific customers by taking a possible sales opportunity and then creating bespoke books or products together in a commercial and time-sensitive way
  • Brainstorming the choice of narrator for the audiobook you’re working on – deciding whether the story is best brought to life by a brand new voice, an A-list actor or even the author themselves
  • Or it could mean joining #MerkyBooks, where one of the eight traineeships will take place

  • Go-getter with the drive to get stuck in and make things happen
  • Strong problem solving skills with the ability to take initiative
  • Curious and hungry to learn and find out more, especially when it comes to ideas, people and culture
  • Adaptable in an environment where priorities and situations can change
  • Strong attention to detail – Checking data, facts, spelling, grammar, dates – editorial teams sweat the small stuff because they know it all adds up to creating the best book or experience possible
  • Able to connect with people and bring out the best in one another and their authors
  • An ability to bind all these qualities together with a love for ideas and stories, wherever they’re from and however they’re told
