The role of Technical Trainee is an opportunity to acquire experience in the trade of technical theatre in a small creative arts venue. You will have the opportunity to work with the Technical Teams across a variety of programmes in Theatre and Artist Development and London Contemporary Dance School.

WHAT YOU WILL LEARN

  • To assist the technical team and faculty with all duties carried out in technical support of events within the Theatre, the School and The Place’s wider programme
  • Work on get-ins and get-outs as called and to deputise for the Technician or Technical and Production Coordinator when necessary
  • Work on performances, assisting in the rigging, operation and control of sound, lighting and projection equipment
  • Acting as stage-management and crew as required
  • To assist in planned maintenance and weekly checks for all sets, rigging, lighting, sound, AV, and video recording equipment both in theatre and studios; including Portable Appliance Testing
  • Achieve the highest possible technical standards in sound, video, lighting, staging & rigging for all events. Including assisting in the maintenance and upkeep of all technical equipment
  • Become proficient in the use of the venues lighting and sound desks, patch systems and other aspects of the technical infrastructure
  • Become proficient in the use of the venues audio-visual equipment
  • To promote good working relationships with all visiting companies and artists, as well as students and staff, and to provide a welcoming environment within the theatre and the school
  • To assist in the management of the school’s technical resources, particularly the equipment booking system and external hirers requirements
  • Comply and work within the guidelines of The Place’s licence, especially with regard to Health and Safety issues and legislative requirements
  • To assist the Technical manager in implementing working practices and to advise on relevant practicalities. For example, planning how to deliver action points from risk assessments etc.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, EXPERIENCE

Essential

  • Knowledge or experience in lighting technology, including rigging and focussing lights
  • An understanding of sound reinforcement
  • An understanding of Projection / AV / Video
  • Experience of team working
  • Awareness of current Health and Safety legislation
  • Ability and experience in manual handling and working at height
  • The ability to work flexibly and dynamically, even under pressure
  • A degree or equivalent experience in Technical Theatre or Performance

Desirable

  • Knowledge of ETC Eos family Lighting desks
  • Knowledge in the use of professional playback software, such as Qlab
  • Experience in camera operation and video editing
  • Portable Appliance Testing training/experience
  • Experience in the use of CAD software
  • Knowledge of European Languages
  • Interest in Contemporary Dance
