Sales, Marketing & PR Intern

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an self-motivated and proactive Sales, Marketing and PR Intern to join the team. In this role you will gain valuable experience in children’s book publishing. Renowned for its truly original publishing and outstanding quality, this position at Walker Books is a great opportunity for someone looking to develop their skills in sales, logistics, publicity and marketing.


Sales & Logistics:

  • Collate books and sales materials for presentations, conferences and mail-outs
  • Preparing the agenda and sales information for monthly re-print under consideration meetings. Up-dating of the spreadsheets, photocopying and distributing the packs
  • Up-dating the sales information and distributing the sales positional grids for fortnightly Departmental meetings

Marketing and Publicity:

  • Organise proof and promotional material mailings to media, consumer, book trade and librarian contacts
  • Source promotional materials for specialist press mailings
  • Update and maintain their mailing database of bookshop and librarian contacts
  • Assist with the logistics around events
  • Create and co-ordinate the production of all show cards for events
  • As appropriate, attend events such as launches in the evening and potentially, in time, school and festival author events
  • Through the PR team and events attended, build relationships with key trade and press contacts in the industry
  • Undertake research for the press team
  • Assist with digital marketing campaigns when relevant e.g. Twitter/Facebook/blog tours
  • Write copy for press releases as required
  • Respond to any queries generated by monthly trade, educational and library eNewsletters
  • Respond to any queries resulting from weekly Waterstones and Foyles communications
  • Respond to any general enquiries from booksellers
  • Assist the Marketing and PR assistant with the organisation and stock control marketing and promotional material


  • Knowledge of the children’s book publishing industry or children’s books
  • Ability to juggle and prioritise multiple projects and requests without close supervision
  • PC Skills – Word, Excel, Outlook and PowerPoint. Photoshop and In Design desirable
  • Communicating appropriately with a range of people from a variety of backgrounds
  • Ability to plan and manage a varied workload in order to meet deadlines
  • Highly self-motivated with excellent interpersonal skills
  • Experience of working or interning in a publishing/creative industry desirable
  • Interest in social media/digital marketing and copywriting
