Projects and Community Officer

The Gate Theatre was founded in 1979 to present ground-breaking international plays to a London audience. Today, the Gate exists to make international theatre that asks essential questions about ourselves, each other and the world. Their work investigates what it means to be alive now.

They are looking for a Projects and Community Officer to provide essential support across the Gate team, supporting the Executive team, and maintaining external partnership relationships, as they work towards Ellen McDougall’s third season as Artistic Director and the Gate’s 40th Anniversary celebrations. This is a fixed term part time role (4 days per week).

The Projects and Community Officer will provide essential administrative support to the Executive Team, across the artistic and project functions of the organisation. The ideal candidate will have a solid passion for and good understanding of the theatre industry.


Projects & Events

  • Support the Artistic Director and Producer in delivering the Gate Theatre’s ancillary programme including ‘In Conversations’ and Workshops and additional projects


  • Script reading and building relationships with writers and agents
  • Recruitment – Administrating the recruitment process for Assistant Directors and Design Assistants, including advertising the roles in good time, working with partner organisations, and arranging interviews

Open Gate

  • Work with the local community and build relationships
  • Manage the personal relationships with charities
  • Administrate community projects and events, manage budgets and contracts
  • Work with the Artistic Director to plan a year round programme of activity for the Young Associates
  • Manage the Open Gate pages on the Gate Theatre’s website
  • Where appropriate, create digital education packs to accompany productions
  • Integrate all Open Gate activity digitally, investigating new digital ways to open up their work

General / Office Management Duties

  • Work with the Artistic Director, managing artist emails and being the main point of contact for artist enquiries
  • Manage the Artistic Director’s (and on occasion Executive Director’s) diaries and arranging meetings
  • Taking minutes for meetings where necessary
  • Share responsibility with the rest of the Gate staff for day-to-day office management and box office calls


  • Project management or producing experience in a venue or in a theatre venue
  • Experience of delivering community projects
  • Strong administrative skills
  • An understanding of budget management
  • An understanding of contracts
  • A good understanding of the theatre industry and artists working within it
  • Excellent organisational skills
  • An ability to form strong relationships with a wide range of different people
  • An ability to work in a small, dynamic team, and to use initiative
  • An ability to work effectively under pressure
  • Excellent written and communication skills
  • A passion for theatre and willingness to learn
