General Administrator

Calling all theatre lovers! Do you have experience delivering administrative support to a busy office? Familiar with HR practices? If so, this opportunity could be the one for you…

The Almeida is a theatre company with a national and international reputation for producing work of the highest standard – achieving recognition through consistent critical acclaim, increasing national reach, international profile and breadth of audiences.

They are looking for a General Administrator to support the running of the Almeida Theatre offices and buildings. This role provides administrative and operational support on a day to day basis for the general management of the company. Additionally, the role has specific responsibility for the administration of all human resources (HR) for the company including the recruitment, induction, training, development and welfare of all employees.

The successful candidate will have the ability to work with tact and diplomacy, excellent communication skills and be able prioritise varying workloads effectively and have absolute attention to detail.


Human Resources

  • Provide recruitment support to managers. Manage and administer all recruitment undertaken at the Almeida, to ensure it is carried out correctly and in line with their recruitment and equal opportunities policies
  • Manage the induction process for new starters including induction plans, IT, phone and desk set up
  • Draw up and issue new contracts or contract changes and other paperwork
  • Support and minute internal meetings as required; including annual appraisals; grievance meetings and informal and formal disciplinary meetings and hearings
  • Book training courses, conferences and travel for staff
  • Manage the company’s HR records in line with current data protection law
  • Work closely with the Finance team to process the monthly payroll
  • Gather and process data including equal opportunities data to support the Almeida’s annual reporting to Arts Council England
  • Ensure that the Almeida Staff Handbook and Induction Pack are up to date and reviewed regularly
  • Update the staff page of each production programme, coordinating with Operations Director and Press & Media Relations Manager to do so

Student Placements

  • Support Heads of Departments (Producing, Marketing, Participation, Production, Stage Management, Wardrobe) recruiting student placements as required
  • Ensure all placements have relevant paperwork and records are completed

Office Management

  • Oversee the smooth running and general maintenance of the Almeida Theatre building and office at 108 Upper Street, being the first point of contact for any issues related to office and building functionality
  • Manage office contracts and relationships with key service providers, working within allocated budgets
  • Responsible for the upkeep of general office equipment
  • Undertake annual reviews of office contracts
  • Be a first aider and fire marshal for the 108 site (during office hours and, if required and convenient, to support evening and weekend activity – TOIL is given for this)

IT and Phones

  • Provide first port of call technical support to staff and visitors in respect of the telephone system and IT systems in conjunction with their external support companies and ensure any reported issues are being dealt with promptly
  • Work closely with the Operations Director to implement new infrastructure improvements
  • Work with Head of Finance and Box Office Manager to ensure the Almeida is PCI compliant

  • Ability to work with tact, diplomacy and complete confidentiality
  • Absolute attention to detail, particularly in relation to dealing with contracts and the collection of data
  • Enthusiasm for/ interest in the theatre and the work of the Almeida


  • Experience of using HR software packages, ideally Sage HR
  • Working knowledge of employment law and HR policies and procedures
  • Line management experience
  • Practical knowledge of and ability to trouble shoot IT and phone systems
  • First Aid trained (3 day course)
  • Fire Marshal trained
