Gallery & Arts Development Manager

Thelma Hulbert Gallery (THG) is an ambitious gallery that supports and promotes contemporary art and craft and is recognised as outstanding for its accessibility and inclusivity. As the cultural hub for East Devon District Council, THG plays an important role in the visual arts ecology of the South West, bringing together art, environment, health and wellbeing as important outcomes for the Council’s Corporate Plan. THG aims to develop audiences through engagement by engaging with a wide range of communities in East Devon and beyond, striving to be, accessible, engaging and inspirational to all its visitors.

They currently have a rare and exciting opportunity for a Gallery and Arts Development Manager to spearhead the strategic direction and artistic programme of their small but important art gallery, bringing together arts, cultural regeneration, social engagement, environment and health and wellbeing. The successful postholder will be able to identify new directions, partnerships and opportunities in order to ensure THG’s ongoing and future success.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Providing leadership and vision for the THG team, its volunteers and stakeholders
  • Develop a high quality artistic and commercially viable events and outreach programme
  • Diversifying and securing THG’s income sources and sustainable forms of revenue relevant to a rural arts organisation
  • Focus on linking art with health and wellbeing, and identifying new directions, partnerships and opportunities for THG’s ongoing and future success
  • Raising the public profile of THG through showcasing and sharing its achievements both within EDDC and regionally

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, EXPERIENCE

  • A bachelor’s degree or equivalent experience in a related field and experience of management in a professional arts organisation
  • An enthusiasm for contemporary visual arts
  • Highly personable and engaging
  • Adept at building positive relationships with a fantastic team of staff and volunteers, together with a wide range of partners and key stakeholders
  • Demonstrable track record in fundraising and income generation from a variety of sources
  • Experience of strategic business planning and budget management, will ensure you are able to achieve financial targets and commercial success
  • Ideally has flexibility to work some evenings and weekends
  • Someone who thrives on organisational ability and the need to juggle multiple and sometimes competing priorities
