Since 1979, English Touring Opera (ETO) has toured outstanding live productions and impactful education and community projects to more towns and cities than any other UK opera company. At the heart of their ethos is making exceptional artistic experiences available and accessible to everyone. They reach over 50,000 people a year with productions that reach a range of audiences. They produce ambitious programmes of high-quality, innovative opera that introduce, educate and inspire audiences with distinctive new repertoire. In doing so they advance public awareness, engagement and enjoyment of this powerful art form.

ETO are looking for a Development Officer. This role is for someone with a love of opera who will support a new programme to bring new audiences to their award-winning performances. The successful candidate will work closely with the Head of Development & Communications and across a number of departments, in a new role made possible by the John Ellerman Foundation.


  • Bring in new audiences through working with ETO’s local volunteer network, partners, venues, music societies, and other communities
  • Develop relationship with existing audiences to better understand and influence future communications
  • Increase gift giving and deliver a national programme of performance based events to offer to current and potential Members
  • Revitalise ETO’s long standing pre-show talk programme to better serve audiences and Members
  • Deliver fundraising appeals to generate additional income for specific projects
  • Act as an ambassador for the company



  • A passion for the arts, music and ETO’s mission
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills, with the ability to interact with people from all backgrounds and ages with confidence, using tact and diplomacy
  • Excellent written communications skills
  • Track record of event management and strong organisational skills
  • Experience cultivating new relationships
  • A methodical approach and eye for detail


  • A good working knowledge of opera
  • Audience development experience
  • Experience working in a fundraising team, with a successful track record of securing donations from Individual Donors
  • Excellent customer services skills
  • Confident public speaking skills
