Communications Officer

The Rory Peck Trust (RPT) is a cornerstone of media freedom and one of the only organisations in the world dedicated exclusively to supporting freelance journalists. They provide practical and financial support to freelance journalists and their families worldwide, assisting in times of crisis and helping them to work more safely and professionally. RPT believe that freelancers play an important and integral role within news-gathering. Their purpose of protecting and supporting them provides a significant contribution to independent journalism.

RPT are looking for a Communications Officer to join their busy team. Their small Communications team supports all areas of the organisation, its global partners and network to plan and deliver effective communications. The team also manages RPT’s multilingual online resource, which is used by thousands of freelance journalists worldwide. The successful candidate will be central to the team, helping to shape the organisation’s communications by producing high-quality content and campaigns. This role is four days a week.

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Create and deliver engaging content and campaigns for various digital channels, including the website, social media platforms and e-newsletter while maintaining them
  • Maintain regular communication with staff and external partners to identify and develop opportunities for stories and content
  • Schedule, produce and co-ordinate e-newsletters, managing subscriber database and data
  • Create, edit and co-ordinate content for the brochure and Annual Review
  • Design marketing materials such as banners, posters, leaflets and postcards for events
  • Maintain and update online resources, uploading content and creating pages
  • Assist in developing communications and marketing strategies
  • Remain up-to-date with digital trends, products, tools and innovation, identifying opportunities for development and opportunities for partnership and collaboration
  • Use online reporting tools and surveys to measure, analyse and report on performance
  • Represent RPT at relevant conferences, meetings and public events as required

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, EXPERIENCE

Essential 

  • Interest and/or background in journalism
  • Minimum three years’ experience in marketing and/or communication, preferably in the human rights or charitable sector
  • Excellent copywriting, editing, and proof-reading skills for offline and online channels
  • Experience of website management and using digital tools and analytics
  • Experience of managing organisational social media platforms (eg. Twitter, Facebook, Instagram) and online community development and engagement
  • Proficiency in design and video editing software (eg. Photoshop, Final Cut Pro)
  • Ability to work independently on varied projects with creativity and flexibility
  • Strong eye for detail
  • Experience of delivering projects and campaigns using a range of methods and tactics
  • Ability to prioritise and deliver high-quality work with minimal supervision

Desirable

  • Experience of developing communications and marketing strategies
  • Proficiency in a second language
