Free Word is an arts venue and producer focused on the power and politics of words. They are also a collaborative home for organisations interested in who gets to speak and be heard in society. They aim to become a significant player in the UK cultural sector – a small, but high-profile champion of powerful writing and live experiences, highlighting underheard voices and ideas of our time and influencing the range of perspectives in the mainstream.

From their Clerkenwell venue they produce two seasons a year addressing important contemporary issues and host dynamic public events responding to society, culture and politics, in partnership with writers, artists and activists

They are in search of an ambitious and passionate Communications Manager who will shape and deliver Free Word’s communications strategy across audience development, press and marketing campaigns

The successful candidate will understand the value of strategy and planning, have experience of working with the press, and will play a key role working with Free Word’s Artistic Director and Producers to ensure that their Seasons are developed and communicated in-line with their audience development and impact ambitions.



  • Devise impactful strategies across brand management, audience development, and external communications (impact) including Press and Hires, working with other team members as appropriate
  • Shape effective communications campaigns to deliver on these strategies, making best use of available resources

Relationships & Line Management

  • Build excellent relationships with Free Word’s internal and external stakeholders including Staff, Board, Free Word Community, Season Contributors (Writers, Artists, Partners); Press & Media; Hirers; Funders, to enable the widest reach of the voices and work that Free Word programmes

Planning & Delivery

  • Free Word’s digital platforms and communications, including our website, social media platforms and digital marketing campaigns
  • Creation and production of high quality, well proofed and edited print and digital content that has been cleared with relevant managers and stakeholders including: brochures, newsletters, social media content, photography, filming, recording and editing of Free Word events, including vox-pops
  • Effective distribution of Free Word’s season and hires collateral and messaging inside and beyond the building
  • PR including co-ordinating launches, interviews, photo-calls and other media activities as necessary (with support from our PR Associates)
  • Clearly articulated and well socialised brand guidelines
  • Effective on-brand internal and external signage
  • Effective segmentation and management of Free Word’s audience data, and appropriate targeted campaigns
  • Reputational risk management (with the Executive Director)

Monitoring & Evaluation

  • Monitor and evaluate the effectiveness of Free Word’s relationships with internal and external audiences including press, capturing and analysing data using Free Word’s databases (Spektrix and Artifax), Google Analytics, surveys and feedback forms etc, and feeding into Free Word’s wider evaluation strategy
  • Write clear, useful quarterly reports for the Board and contribute content as required for funders and other reports
  • Embed learning into future communications strategies and campaigns
  • Ensure Free Word is compliant with all relevant data protection legislation and guidance (GDPR, PECR etc.)


  • Understanding of and ability to implement strategy
  • Strong planning and project management skills including budgeting
  • Ability to understand motivations and behaviours of different stakeholder and audience types
  • Knowledge of Audience Development approaches including segmentation
  • Knowledge of 18-30s culturally and politically engaged audiences, and ofmore establishment audiences
  • Experience of developing and implementing on and off-line marketing campaigns
  • Understanding of digital marketing (e-SRM, UX, split-testing, CMS, online advertising and social media)
  • Experience of producing print and digital marketing content
  • Experience of working with the press
  • Understanding of brand development and implementation
  • Strong IT Skills including some knowledge of design programmes (Photoshop, InDesign)
