Sky is Europe’s leading media and entertainment company with over 24 million customers across seven countries. The content team at Sky UK are responsible for commissioning, acquiring and planning content across multiple content and channel brands, including Sky One, Sky Atlantic, Sky Witness and Sky Comedy, factual services Sky Crime, Sky Nature and Sky Documentaries, alongside Sky Arts, the UK’s only channel dedicated to arts and culture. Their portfolio also includes Sky’s world leading home film service, Sky Cinema and Sky’s own children programming in Sky Kids.

The Commissioning and Content teams at Sky UK are excited to offer four people the chance to join them on a 12-month programme comprised of two six-month placements in the following divisions of your choice: either Sky Kids, Factual or Entertainment commissioning or Programme Strategy. These great opportunities, based in Osterley, will enable you to learn and grow, whilst being supported by passionate colleagues and experts.

Sky’s Department Details

Sky Kids Commissioning

Sky Kids offers families 8 live kids channels and over 5000 episodes of on demand viewing as well as the Sky Kids app – a safe space for kid’s orientated content, games and art tools. Their programmes cover animation, drama, shorts and factual entertainment including their weekly news show “FYI: For Your Info” which is also on Sky News. The Sky Kid’s Team work closely with their partner channels Nickelodeon and Cartoon Network.

Documentaries and Factual Commissioning

Seeing ideas from the pitch to the screen and beyond, the Factual Commissioning team bring premium, original features and multi-part series to Sky Documentaries. They also create landmark natural history programmes for Sky Nature and true crime original series for Sky Crime.

Entertainment and Arts Commissioning

The Entertainment and Arts Commissioning team works across a variety of Non-Scripted Originals for Sky One and Sky Arts. As the UK’s only dedicated arts channel, Sky Arts exists to bring more art to more people across the UK. They showcase the best of classical and popular music, theatre, opera, dance and the visual arts, as well as original drama and comedy. The department’s shows include programmes such as ‘A League of Their Own’ and ‘The Russell Howard Hour’ to ‘Cezanne’ and ‘The Style Council’.

Programme Strategy

The Programme Strategy team create and manage content planning story across Sky’s channel brands including Sky One, Sky Atlantic and Sky Cinema. They ensure a continuous and ever evolving offering for Sky Customers.

What you will learn

Sky Kids Commissioning

  • Gain an insight into Sky Kid’s strategy, development of programme ideas and production processes
  • Work with the Commissioning Editors on programme projects, games and development
  • Help to plan the editorial for a kids YouTube channel
  • Work with the production team that make FYI: For Your Info, their weekly news programme for kids

Documentaries and Factual Commissioning

  • Learn how the Factual Team commission compelling feature documentaries and limited series for Sky Documentaries, gripping true crime for Sky Crime and stunning natural history content for Sky Nature
  • Learn how they work with outside indies (independent production companies) to develop ideas
  • Gain insight into reading and responding to pitches,
  • Gain an understanding of their production processes from managing budgets to feeding back on editorial

Entertainment and Arts Commissioning

  • Learn how a show is created from the initial development through to the transmission for Sky One and Sky Arts programmes
  • Learn how to read proposals and pitches
  • Learn to create presentations and show reels
  • Liaise with various departments including PR and Social teams

Programme Strategy 

  • Learn how the Programme Strategy team create, and produce compelling content to engage their audiences
  • Develop an understanding of audience behaviour via research, insight and data
  • Learn to screen potential titles for Sky’s content brand
  • Actively contribute to discussions by offering editorial feedback to the Programme Strategy and the Acquisitions department

Knowledge, Skills, Experience

  • A graduate in any degree discipline or soon will be
  • A quick learner and a team player
  • An excellent communicator and self-motivated
  • For Sky Kids: a passion for media content, especially for younger viewers
  • For Factual: a passion for storytelling and an appreciation of factual content
  • For Entertainment & Arts: Knowledge of Arts and Culture and/or Comedy
  • Programme Strategy: A passion for and knowledge of television and a creative thinker with strong editorial judgement
