International Justice Mission (IJM) UK is the world’s largest international anti-slavery organisation working to end modern day slavery, human trafficking, and other forms of violence against people living in poverty. Their global team of lawyers, social workers and investigators works in partnership with local police, prosecutors and authorities in 12 countries to bring about justice system transformation, so that the law works to protect those who are vulnerable to violence and exploitation.

IJM UK is looking for a passionate and talented PR professional with a strong desire to use their skills to see slavery ended in our lifetime and violence against people in poverty stopped, for good. The role of Public Relations and Media Officer will form a crucial part of the Marketing, External Affairs and Media team. The Officer will support the Director of Marketing, Media and External Affairs in securing and delivering strategic media opportunities; and work closely with the Marketing Manager and Social Media Officer to develop powerful influencer, artist and ambassador partnerships. 

Responsibilities

Public Relations

  • Support IJM UK’s Director of Marketing, Media and External Affairs
  • Work with the wider IJM UK and global team to identify strategic media opportunities
  • Devise media strategies for campaigns
  • Actively sell stories to the media
  • Draft and distributing press releases
  • Write compelling media comments, op eds, features and letters to editors, often to tight deadlines
  • Harness the news agenda to contribute to existing stories
  • Identify key media contacts and build and maintain relationships
  • Receive and manage press enquiries
  • Set up media interviews and support spokespeople in their media work, including basic media training and briefings
  • Monitor media coverage and online profile
  • Ensure that all media pitches, quotes and content are compliant with IJM global storytelling policy and messaging guidelines and evaluating any risks
  • Evaluate media campaigns and performance and writing reports for Director/board

Influencer, Artist and Ambassador engagement 

  • Work closely with our Director of Marketing, Social Media Officer and Marketing Manager
  • Develop and implement an artist/influencer/ambassador strategy
  • Develop a group of highly committed high-profile supporters
  • Manage joint initiatives with partners, including with musicians and fashion designers
  • Co-ordinate and approve all contact with influencers/ambassadors/artist partners, prioritising requests when necessary
  • Draft content for artist partners/influencers/ambassadors (including blog posts, YouTube scripts, social posts)
  • Manage all information relating to high-profile supporters
  • Ensure that every request to an influencer/ambassdor/artist is packaged as an opportunity that sells the benefits to them of their involvement with our charity
  • Liaise directly with influencers/ambassadors/artists and their teams, negotiating as appropriate the terms of involvement and the parameters of their support

Knowledge, skills, experience

Essential

  • Experienced in writing press releases and delivering successful media pitches
  • 1-3+ years’ experience in PR, either in house or agency
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills – including strong copywriting capabilities for op eds and blogs
  • Excellent relationship management capabilities, including being able to establish rapport quickly and develop new and ongoing relevant relationships
  • Excellent networking skills
  • Excellent time management, project management and the ability to prioritise a varied workload
  • Understanding of the political and media landscape in the UK
  • Understanding of modern slavery and violence against women and children issues internationally
  • There is a requirement for the job holder to have a personal commitment to the Christian faith (as defined by the Apostles’ Creed) as functions within this role will require knowledge and personal experience of the Christian faith and will be promoting the organisation’s Christian identity and spiritual formation practices (This post is subject to an occupational requirement that the holder be a Christian under Part 1 of Schedule 9 to the Equality Act 2010)
