The Get Into Publishing courses provide a complete overview of the industry and an expert insight into the main roles within it. From editorial and design, to production, sales and marketing, the course is designed to give you a comprehensive understanding of the business, not only to help identify the area that’s right for you but also to provide you with some basic skills to improve your chances of employment.
There are sponsored places available for each of these courses. The sponsors are keen to support those who were eligible for free school meals and/or were the first in their family to attend university, or have a disability. An Introduction to Book Publishing – March 15th - 18th
Open to anyone over 16, the course is taught by experts from across publishing to give an up-to-date, practical and relevant look at the industry. It gives an insight into the structure of a publishing house and the main roles within it - editorial and design, production, rights, sales and marketing. It also offers some valuable skills to aid employment and an excellent opportunity to meet key figures in publishing. On completion, delegates receive a Certificate of Attendance from UCL.
Transferable Skills for Publishing – April 17th -18th
A two-day workshop covering the essential transferable skills for publishing. Designed to build confidence at interviews, in a first job or internship, or work experience, the course covers pitching and presenting books, numeracy and negotiation for publishers plus an introduction to metadata.
An introduction to Marketing for Publishing – April 24th
A one-day, online course that looks at how books are publicised, marketed, and sold. You’ll be given a good introduction to the core skills required to build a successful career in these areas. In a stimulating mix of theory and practical exercises. Topics will include: how to position a book and create a campaign; how to brief a designer; how to write convincing copy; marketing to the trade-persuading booksellers; digital marketing to readers; analysing sales data and what you can learn from it.
Production Masterclass – June 19th
This informative one-day online course will show you what producing a book actually involves. And what makes a great production person. You’ll learn the skills and knowledge you need to take your first step, discover all of the different production roles and the various skills they require, and by doing so, identify which job is right for you. You will also get an insight into the fascinating process of how books are made – from receipt of the edited manuscript through to printed and bound books. You’ll also be equipped with the basic knowledge you need to apply for your first role in production.
An Introduction to Editorial – June 12th
A one-day course exploring the vital role of the editor in book publishing and introducing the basic skills required. Aimed at candidates from all backgrounds, this course is suitable for anyone looking to get their first job or wanting to move into editorial from another field. These subjects will be covered: proofreading; how to edit copy; commissioning and editing fiction and non-fiction; the UK publishing houses, imprints, and lists; a day in the life of an editorial assistant; applying and interviewing for editorial positions.
