Modern Art is a London based gallery opened by Stuart Shave in 1998, and is presently homed in two locations on Helmet Row in the Clerkenwell area of central London and Bury Street in St James's.

Modern Art has an exciting six-month traineeship for an entry-level candidate looking to begin a career in a commercial art gallery. The role will have two points of staff contact and will shadow different staff members including Sales Director, Artist Liaison and Registrar. Modern Art can provide IT training in Photoshop, Adobe Acrobat, Indesign, Illustrator & Premiere alongside insight into the day-to-day administration of a contemporary art gallery.

Responsibilities 

Front of House and Gallery Administration

  • Greeting visitors and being first point of contact (make eye contact, say hello, be polite, friendly and helpful)
  • Assisting on preparations for meetings
  • Directing front of house queries
  • Answering incoming phone calls
  • Ensuring all the handout material is available
  • Ensuring the front desk is presentable and free of personal effects and ensuring no confidential information is visible
  • Keeping visitor log and update email addresses left on the visitor book
  • Administering postage and mailing
  • Ordering office, kitchen and bathroom supplies across both galleries
  • Ensuring that the gallery premises – both inside and outside – are clean and presentable to the highest standard
  • Assistance on artist files including CVs, bibliographies, and any other digital records
  • Updating External Exhibitions spreadsheet listing all artists activities and exhibitions
  • Assistance on catalogue mailouts
  • Ipad management

Archive Assistance 

  • Downloading and processing images of art works and exhibitions
  • Undertaking colour correction and other photoshop tasks when necessary
  • Updating gallery website with images (with training)
  • Sourcing images of external exhibitions of represented artists
  • Managing the publication library; cataloguing books and monitoring inventory on site and in storage
  • Updating and managing ‘Sum Up’ book selling software
  • Assisting on PDFs for sales and artist liaison purposes

Press

  • Monitoring Google Alerts for news and collating and archiving recent press
  • Updating artist press packs

Knowledge, skills, experience 

  • A genuine interest in a career in art galleries
  • Willingness to assist on all levels of administration, and ability to multitask
  • Good communication skills and an eye for detail
