BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead is an international art gallery established in 1998. BALTIC’s admission is free and theyare visited by people from the North East, the UK and overseas. Their mission is to create greater understanding of the world through outstanding, experimental and inspiring contemporary art which has power, relevance and meaning for individuals and communities. They are hiring a Curator (Local) to create a programme, relevant to their constituents and communities, that thinks critically about global, social and cultural concerns through the lens of the local.

Responsibilities

  • To actively contribute to the conception and direction of BALTIC’s Curatorial Programme, which support the vision and strategic aims of BALTIC
  • To develop and deliver relevant programmes, projects, exhibitions and events that are rooted from, engage with and provide inspiration to local communities of geography, interest and circumstance
  • To think critically about global social and cultural concerns through the lens of the local
  • To research, connect and work with artists, academics, cultural practitioners, and to collaborate with other organisations, in order to facilitate programming that embeds local, national and international conversations
  • To successfully realise projects, demonstrating best curatorial practice in all aspects of work, and in liaison with internal teams at BALTIC
  • To lead the coordination of the Live Programme, including key partnerships and collaborations, in close dialogue with the HoC&PP and the Director
  • To be an active member of the Centre for Public Practice (CPP) BALTIC’s framework for joint working across curatorial and learning teams, and assist with realising the main objectives of the group
  • To communicate effectively and work closely with teams across BALTIC in order to realise efficient programming
  • To lead on the development, writing, commissioning, editing and proofing of relevant text and interpretation, for the programme in relation to project outcomes
  • To effectively monitor individual project budgets

Knowledge, Skills, Experience

  • Significant curatorial experience with specific experience and knowledge of artists’ development, responsive programming and performance
  • Demonstrable commitment to the engagement and development of diverse audiences
  • Demonstrable experience of collaborating with artists, organisations and communities of geography, interest and circumstance
  • Evidence of supporting artists to develop their practice
  • Excellent knowledge of contemporary art at a national and international level and of cultural and socio-political debates
  • Confident public speaking and writing skills
  • Experience of initiating and project managing a wide range of visual arts projects
  • Strong interest in developing innovative approaches and tactics that engage online audiences
  • Ability to prioritise, meet objectives and work to deadlines
  • Excellent knowledge of contemporary art at a national and international level and of cultural and socio-political debates
  • Awareness of best practice with regards to contracting and working with freelancers

Desirable

  • Exhibition-making experience
  • Experience of delivering socially-engaged artist programming
  • Experience of live art networks and practice
  • Post graduate qualification in Arts/Museum Studies/Gallery Learning
  • Experience of working in the North East
