Ashley Francis-Roy talks about his journey from researcher to AP…

Ashley Francis-Roy did a year-long internship at the BBC in their Arts team from September 2014 to September 2015. Since then he’s worked as a researcher at Pulse Films and then an Assistant Producer at Acme Films, working on a Jay Z and Kanye West film for Channel 4. He’s currently an Assistant Producer at Bohemia Films.

Ashley writes: “Even before I secured an internship through Creative Access, the team were so so supportive. They offered guidance on interviews and CVs and did everything they could to give you the best chance of being successful in your applications. This amazing support continued through the internship and even two years after graduating we feel the love from the team. Whenever I have felt stuck or needed advice Josie and the team have always been there on the phone or available for a meeting.”

As a CA intern you’re part of a huge network of people working in the creative industries and so have a great support network of peers.

The actual internship offered me an extremely high standard of training and has really allowed me to progress quickly in the industry. I had two great mentors who looked out for me and helped curate a fantastic year working in different TV departments of the BBC, on a range of productions with the best teams. I worked with some fantastic producers and directors who shared their extensive knowledge and experience with me.

By the time I finished, I was in a strong position to apply for great TV jobs as a Researcher.

In terms of his next steps, Ashley says:

“I’m currently working as an Assistant Producer on documentaries for broadcasters like the BBC, Channel 4, and Sky. Since finishing at the BBC I have worked as a freelancer for companies including the Pulse Films, Acme Films, the BBC and Bohemia Films. I’m really lucky to do a lot of shooting work and have filmed 3 whole films for TV in the past year. Getting to travel a lot is a brilliant perk of filming documentaries and I’ve filmed all over the world. I’m about to go all over America for 4 weeks for a music doc. I’m hoping to continue to build on my experience in TV as an Assistant Producer and can’t wait to start producing and directing in the near future.”

And just in case you thought you knew everything you could about Ashley, he told us four new facts about himself:

1. Whitney Houston makes me cry.
2. My favourite film is Serial Mom by John Waters.
3. I really don’t like whistling.
4. I’m learning how to swim.

Good luck with the swimming Ashley!
